The Importance of Digital Access

Digital Access ensures that all individuals and communities have access to the digital resources and opportunities needed to thrive in today’s world. This includes affordable internet, reliable devices, and the skills required to utilize technology effectively. Achieving digital access is essential for participating fully in education, economic activities, and civic life, particularly in rural areas like Bristol Bay.

Geographic isolation in Alaska amplifies the challenges of digital access, creating barriers to state and federal services, education, and employment. As one village leader explained, “The state and federal agencies act as if we are all already connected. We are not, and we are trying to keep up, but we can’t.”

SALMONet is committed to addressing these barriers and bridging the digital divide, helping rural Alaskans overcome challenges like high costs, limited-service reliability, and lack of affordable devices. By focusing on digital access, SALMONet empowers communities to access essential services and opportunities, ensuring no one is left behind in an increasingly digital world.
